Graduate Diploma in Journalism

To be considered for admission, it is essential that your application to the Graduate Diploma in Journalism is complete and that all documents reach us by the stated deadlines. Incomplete applications will not be accepted. For Canadian applicants, the deadline for all documents is January 15 of the year in which the applicant seeks admission to the program. For international applicants, the deadline for all documents is the preceding December 15 (e.g., December 15, 2010 for entry in June, 2011). Please note that a minimum GPA of 3.0 is required for admission (based on Concordia's 4.3 grading system).

Please note: Applicants to the Graduate Diploma in Journalism are no longer required to take an English proficiency test.

Instructions for Graduate Diploma Program:

Please note: You will be required to charge your Admissions Application Fee to a Visa or MasterCard.

Step 1: Go to: https://connect2.concordia.ca/

Step 2: Create a profile on Connect2Concordia web site;

Step 3: Once your profile is complete, click on Admissions/Apply button and follow the instructions until you have completed all the steps and attached the required documents (attached documents include:proof of Canadian citizenship, permanent resident status or refugee status (not required from Study Permit students); a Statement of Purpose (which explains in 500 words why you want to study journalism). If you cannot attach your proof of citizenship, permanent resident status or refugee status, mail a photocopy to the Graduate Admissions Application Centre (see address below);

Step 4: Arrange to have mailed directly to the Graduate Admissions Application Centre (see address below) three official letters of reference using Concordia University's Academic Assessment Form.

Please Note: At least two of these references must be from academic sources.

Step 5: Arrange to have mailed directly to the Graduate Admissions Application Centre (see address below) official transcripts from all previous university studies (complete, incomplete and in progress).

Please Note: This can take time so make the request as soon as possible to ensure transcripts are received by January 15. Faxed copies of documents will not be accepted. For international applicants, this means official documents from your institution stating the specific degree(s) which you have been awarded, along with official translations in either English or French. Official transcripts are not required from Concordia undergraduate students applying to a graduate program.

Instructions for MA (Journalism Studies) Program:

Applicants apply on-line at https://connect2.concordia.ca/  Read all instructions carefully and refer to the checklist below to ensure your application is complete.

Please note: You will be required to charge your Admissions Application Fee to a Visa or MasterCard.

A Complete Application Includes:

  • An Application Form and Fee.
  • Curriculum vitae (CV) including a summary of any work experience (paid or voluntary) that is relevant to your application.
  • A Letter of Intent (five double-spaced pages) providing: a brief overview of your university studies and what courses, professors, or scholarly work and theorists were the most influential and/or most challenging; a brief description of the type of research you would like to undertake; a list of courses in our program which are of particular interest to you and professors you feel might support your research interests.
  • Academic Assessment Forms with Reference Letters attached.  Three completed forms and letters (with at least two from academic sources) are required.  The two-page form is available online at: https://connect2.concordia.ca/ (it can also be found here). Referees need to return the form and letter to the address shown on the form.
  • Arrange to have mailed directly to the Graduate Admissions Application Centre (see address below) official transcripts from all previous university studies (complete, incomplete and in progress).
  • Proof of Canadian Citizenship (if applicable).  A legible photocopy of one of the following documents must be provided:  Canadian birth certificate; Canadian citizenship card (both sides); or Permanent Resident card (both sides).  International applicants must visit the following link for more information:  http://supportservices.concordia.ca/iso/immigration/ *If you cannot attach your proof of citizenship, permanent resident status or refugee status, mail a photocopy to the Graduate Admissions Application Centre (see address below).
  • Applicants whose prior degrees are not from an English or French-language university are required to submit TOEFL scores.  The minimum ibTOEFL score is 90 with a minimum of 20 on the written test.

Optional items may include:

  • sample(s) of writing or research (10 pages maximum)
